How Beneficial is Keto Diet

Carbohydrates in the foods you eat are converted to glucose, and your body converts glucose to energy. Fats in your food is stored as fat cells in the body. Thus many people eat more carbohydrates and less fat. Nevertheless, glucose is not the only thing that can provide energy for your body. Ketones produced by the liver can also provide you energy. The ketogenic diet or keto diet in short is a dietary method where carbohydrates are limited and fats are recommended. When you eat more fats, your liver processes fats and produces ketones. This kind of combination has many health benefits, it balances the fat levels in the body and also helps you to shed extra pounds.

What exactly is “ketogenic?” Ketogenic derives from ketosis, a  process performed by the liver while processing fats and protein. By eating fewer carbs and eating more fats, you assist the ketosis process in the body. This will stop body for using glucose for energy, instead, it will convert fats into energy. When you take less carbohydrate, there will be less glucose in your body. Once the glucose level in your body is lowered, there will be no more storage of glucose as fat cells. When you consume more fats, your body begins to burn fats for energy and when the stored fats are burned you will lose weight.

It is not clear how the ketogenic diet exactly works on the people suffering from an epileptic seizure, however, the ketogenic diet has been used to treat epilepsy patients for a long time.

The Three Major Benefits of Ketogenic Diet

Ketogenic Diet Helps You to Lose Weight

When you include a high amount of carbohydrates in your food, your body releases more insulin, thus creating a higher level of glucose in the blood. Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas. The job of insulin is to regulate the storage of glycogen in the liver and accelerate the oxidation of sugar in the cells. Insulin also tells the cells how much energy they can store. When cells can no longer use energy, surplus energy is deposited as fat cells, which result in weight gain. When you opt for keto diet, the carbohydrate intake will be limited, which will stop glucose production. When the body begins to produce less glucose, your blood will get lesser glucose or will be devoid of glucose, and your body start processing fats and convert fats to energy. Keto diet also recommends more fats in the menu. When you eat more fats, your body will also produce more ketones, and these ketones will provide energy for your body.

Therefore, you should eat fewer carbohydrates and more fats. Include monosaturated fats, polyunsaturated fats, and saturated fats in your food.  Olive oil, avocados almonds, walnuts, butter are recommended fatty foods. Eat non-starchy vegetables like spinach, broccoli, kale mushrooms, etc. Include fermented foods in your daily diet. Eat high protein food like meat, fish, eggs, and soy.
