CAN DIWALI SPARKLE WITHOUT CRACKERS?

‘Festivals revitalize us

Festivals energies  us

Festivals are blessing of Almighty.’

India is a land of festivals . India harbours different communities, religions, culture, traditions attributed to its secular nature. Due to this fact, all the  festivals of all the religions are celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm. One of such festival is Diwali: the festival of lights. The festival of ’deepavali’ or our loving Diwali is one of the most celebrated festivals in India and across the world. This festival marks the return of Lord Rama from his 14 years of exile to his kingdom ‘Ayodhya’.

Diwali was the day when lord Rama was welcomed by citizens of Ayodhya by lighting the earthen lamps but now-a-days its way of celebration has altered. People light diyas and burst crackers. They envisage that incinerating crackers is part and parcel to celebrate diwali but this is frivolous fact and we need to come out of this. On the pretext of enjoying , we are polluting the environment  which we inherited from our ancestors and have to give to our children with interest i.e. by making it more exquisite.

Crackers cause air pollution, noise pollution, land pollution and many more which lead to many diseases such as asthma and other breathing problems. Not only this, the noise pollution scares our pets. Old and aged people are also disturbed due to the noise. Crackers are not only detrimental for those who burn them but also for those who manufacture them. Recently one cracker making factory in UP was destroyed in fire. Such incidents result in immense loss of lives and property. Crackers are inflammable and any single err can be catastrophic.

Pollution is increasing day-by-day due to which government has taken very strict steps. The timing for burning crackers has been fixed. The green crackers have been developed to celebrate pollution free Diwali which is a matter of great ecstasy especially for those who can’t celebrate Diwali sans crackers.  But government alone can do nothing.  We have to be the change makers.

 “You must be the change

You wish to see in the world”

                                        -Mahatma Gandhi

There are many alternatives that can be used for making this festival memorable. We can buy earthen lamps and decorate our houses with diyas, rangoli etc. Let’s change this tradition of our country and adopt something exuberant by coming out of morbid atmosphere. Otherwise the day will not be far away when we all will repent but it will be too late by then. Let us set an example by pledging not to deteriorate our precious environment and be cautious about it. Incessant efforts are needed by everyone to annul the use of crackers from our society.

Yes, we can have a sparkling Diwali even without the harmful crackers. Light up diyas, exchange sweets and greetings with your family and friends. Spread love and happiness among the under-privileged. Celebrate with your loved ones. Let’s pledge to celebrate an eco-friendly Diwali. Enjoy a healthy, safe and heart rendering Diwali without crackers.
